View from Port Castelsardo Night View Lungomare

When arriving from Lu Bagnu, the sight as the road bends around the cliffs of the old town and castle (Castelsardo) perched on the cliff side is stunning, particularly at night! Before you reach Castelsardo you will see the port area nestled at the bottom of the hill, from which it is possible to walk around to the town along the recently restored esplanade (Lungomare) before reaching the central beach area. There are bars and restaurants in this area and also as you start to climb up the hill to the old town.

You can drive most of the way up to the old town, but in peak season it can be difficult to park. Half way up the hill if walking you can leave the road and walk along a path below the castle walls which gives great views and really gives you an understanding why the castle was never taken! At the top you can wander around the medieval centre with its multi storey buildings or take in great views of Castelsardo and the coastline from various points including the piazza around the cathedrals' bell tower. The cathedrals is attractive itself but in the vaults below are artefacts from the middle ages including pictures by the "Maestro of Castelsardo". Apartments in Castelsardo >>>

Lu Bagnu is the modern tourist frazione of Castelsardo with further hotels, restaurants and private apartment complexes. The short drive from Castelsardo has great coastal views and the first bar restaurant on the left "Sa Ferula" has a great terrace to enjoy views of the coast and sea. The beaches are with the exception of August not overly busy and pleasant for a walk or a little sunbathing.

Tergu

Tergu is a quiet inland town in the hills above Castelsardo. The early 13th century Romanesque Abbazo di Nostra Signora is worth seeing with the remains of a Benedictine monastery in its grounds. Towards the coast from Tergu is Monte Elias where perched high on a hilltop are the remains of a nuraghic fort. Be warned it is a bit of a winding bumpy road to reach it.

Valledoria

Halfway between Castelsardo and Valledoria just beyond the turning for Valledoria is the "Roccia dell'Elefante" and as soon as you see it you will understand why. Tunnelled below are small "Domus de Janas" (pre-nuraghic tombs). Valledoria itself is a busy tourism centre in its own right with camping and other accommodation either in the town or near its' beach areas at La Caccia and San Pietro a Mare.
