Alghero Centro Storico & Port Area

Alghero's port area covers a broad expanse and has bars and cafes on both side of Via Garibaldi. Entrance by car into much of centro storico is restricted and parking often difficult so best to park just outside. You can follow the port around under the bastions and there is an arched passageway into the old town (Piazza Civica) opposite where the boat trips are based. Heading into the old town you will find numerous sights including the Cathedral (Santa Maria).

Alghero Cathedral's bell tower is particularly notable and finding its location at the rear of the cathedral takes you into the historic narrow streets. The "comune" (town hall) is in Piazza Municipio and heading east you will then find the "Porta Terra" one of Alghero's original landward defences. Piazza Ginnasio is south of here and following Via Carlo Alberto you can leave the old town at Piazza Sulis.

From Piazza Sulis you can then follow the sea walls (Bastione) back around the old town to the harbour area. This is a favourite for a passegiata (evening stroll) for Alghero residents and tourists alike .

Alghero's beach areas are found in the lido area or further around at Spiggia dei Bombarde beyond Fertilia. Regular buses run from the town. The coastal drive from Alghero to Bosa is a popular favourite for an excursion.

The area round Capo Caccia is a nature reserve and the drive is a pleasant coastal road. Further north is the stunning (if windy, popular for surfing) beach at Porto Ferro with steep cliffs and defence towers. Just inland is Lago Baratz, popular for birdwatching or just a refreshing walk in its surrounding pineta.
